Nightwish es una popular banda de Power Metal Sinfónico procedente de Finlandia.
Nightwish nace en julio de 1996, durante una salida de camping de Tuomas Holopainen, quien concibe esta idea de formar una banda en la cual él pueda componer su música, ya que a pesar de ser un músico de estudio para la banda black metal Darkwoods My Betrothed, siente la necesidad de componer sus propias canciones, a su manera. Es por esto que recurre al también músico de sesión de esa banda, Erno Vuorinen (Emppu) como guitarrista. Ambos solicitan la colaboración de Tarja Turunen (en ese tiempo una novata soprano de la Jean Sibelius Academy de Helsinki) y tiempo después llegará a la banda Jukka Nevalainen. Originalmente Nightwish era un proyecto acústico que evolucionó en un acto metal al darse cuenta que la potente voz de Tarja era más adecuada para música de caracter más «bombástico», como el mismo teclista ha manifestado.
Durante la primera mitad de 1997, firman contrato con Spinefarm Records y grabaron un demo de 7 canciones, (entre ellas, Nightwish, la cuál después daría su nombre a la banda) las que a la postre formarían parte de Angels Fall First, el primer disco de la banda. En el segundo semestre de dicho año grabaron otras 4 canciones y publicaron el single titulado The Carpenter, con colaboración de Darkwoods My Bethrothed y Children of Bodom, todo un éxito de ventas en Finlandia. Finalmente, a principios de noviembre, sale al mercado Angels Fall First, con idéntico resultado.
A principios de 1998, y en vista de una notoria carencia de bajista estable, se une al grupo Sami Vänskä, quien había sido invitado para tocar dicho instrumento en la gira de Angels Fall First, y se comienza la grabación de su segundo trabajo titulado Oceanborn (según los fans el disco más importante del grupo junto con Wishmaster) con la colaboración de Tapio Wilska (en las voces de las canciones Devil and The Deep Dark Ocean y The Pharaoh Sails To Orion), que se encuentra disponible en el comercio a principios de diciembre de ese año. Nuevamente, figurando en las listas de ventas como el más exitoso. En el correr del año siguiente esta placa se convierte en el pilar de la internacionalización de Nightwish, llegando a todo el mundo.
Al comienzo del año 2000 la agrupación finesa vuelve a los estudios y comienza a trabajar en su tercer disco Oceanborn, trabajo que se ve interrumpido cuando Tarja se presenta para representar a su país en el Festival de Eurovisión, llegando a la final y quedando en segundo puesto como resultado de la votación popular. Luego de dicha interrupción sale a la venta Wishmaster. Como ya es tradición, obtuvieron éxito de ventas y disco de oro a las pocas semanas de su lanzamiento.
Para el año 2001 Nightwish vuelve a grabar y nada menos que un cover del tema de Gary Moore Over The Hills And Far Away además de nuevas canciones propias (Tenth Man Down y Away) y una versión re-grabada del clásico Astral Romance del disco Angels Fall First, con colaboración de Tonny Kakko, vocalista de Sonata Arctica, para completar el EP titulado Over The Hills And Far Away, que incluía también algunas versiones en directo de canciones de la banda.
Para esta época, por diferencias de criterios, Sami Vänskä es reemplazado por Marco Hietala (ex Sinergy; también bajista y voz de Tarot -grupo heavy metal).
El 2002 es el año en el que aparece Century Child, cuarto álbum de esta agrupación, presentan un trabajo en el que cambian ligeramente su estilo, el nuevo bajista, Marco Hietala, participa también en los coros creando un contraste entre la voz femenina y masculina inédito en Nightwish hasta entonces. Lo que logra una dualidad y cariz único en este grupo , destacando sobre las demás «girls band» de la escena.
Luego de Century Child, en el 2003 la banda entra en un gran receso debido, entre otras cosas, a que Tarja Turunen contrajo matrimonio con el argentino Marcelo Cabulli, empresario de la discográfica Nems, y fue becada para estudiar canto lírico en Alemania (lo cual en un momento puso en peligro la continuidad de Nightwish) como también lo fue que Jukka Nevalainen y su novia Satu tuvieran una hija, Luna.
En el año 2004 los fanáticos de Nightwish esperaron con gran impaciencia la salida a la venta del quinto álbum de la banda titulado Once. En este disco retoman su veta sinfónica acompañada de una buena dosis de metal, ya que cuenta con la participación de la orquesta de la academia londinense de St. Martin in the Fields, partícipe también de admirables proyectos como la banda sonora de El Señor de los Anillos.
El resultado: el mismo día de lanzamiento de Once se convirtió en disco de oro en Finlandia. Con el nuevo álbum Nightwish firma contrato con la casa discográfica Nuclear Blast, lo cual redundó en una mejora considerable de la comercialización de este disco a nivel internacional.
Con la salida de Once, también se lanzan los singles Nemo, Wish I Had An Angel y Kuolema tekee taiteilijan, el último, incluyendo una versión en directo de Symphony of Destruction de la reconocida banda de Thrash Metal, Megadeth. Posteriormente, en el año 2005 se lanzan otros 2 singles, el primero bajo el nombre de The Siren y el segundo, Sleeping Sun el cuál es una versión del clásico de 1998 del disco Oceanborn al igual que un nuevo video, re-editado ahora para el último recopilatorio de Nightwish, Highest Hopes el cuál incluye una versión en directo de High Hopes, original de la banda inglesa Pink Floyd.
El 22 de octubre de 2005, un día después del último concierto de la gira Once Upon a Tour 2004-2005, presentado en el Hartwall Areena, en Finlandia (y grabado para su posterior lanzamiento en el DVD «End of an Era»), Tuomas Holopainen, el líder de la banda, publicaba en la web oficial del grupo una carta abierta. El escrito, que la noche anterior le habían entregado a Tarja Turunen, comunicaba a todos los fans que la vocalista estaba expulsada del grupo. La ruptura produjo una polémica que se alargó por meses, se extendió a sus numerosos fans, y llevó al lanzamiento de una renovada carrera en solitario para Tarja.
Para encontrar un reemplazo, el grupo realizó una audición para hallar a la nueva vocalista, finalizada el 16 de enero de 2007. No fue hasta finales de mayo que se supo oficialmente el nombre de la nueva vocalista; la ex cantante de Alyson Avenue, Anette Olzon, cuya presentación vino de la mano del single Eva. El más reciente álbum de la banda se llama Dark Passion Play, grabado casi en su totalidad antes de hacerse oficial la elección de Anette Olzon. El álbum ha obtenido gran éxito de ventas y de crítica, y a su lanzamiento le siguió una intensa promoción con presentaciones en gran parte del mundo.
